NSBC 2a : Training Checklist

0.0 Preparation for Trip
1.0 Proper Lookout
2.0 Steering Rules (Rules of the Road)
3.0 Aids to Navigation
Instructors may choose whether to begin with Mooring Buoy Objectives (4.0, 5.0, 6.0), or Anchoring Objectives (7.0, 8.0, 9.0).
Further, instructors must factor into their training plan the location of mooring fields and anchorage locations; providing an optimal learning environment to achieve training objectives within the allotted timeline, in balance with opportunities for practice, and safe return transit.
4.0 Mooring Buoy Arrival Preparation
5.0 Arriving at a Mooring Buoy
Notes 5.3 :
- Stop the vessel when at the mooring buoy.
- Safely bring the mooring lines, a􀆩ached to the mooring buoy, on
your vessel (use boat hook if needed); secure the “eyes” of the mooring lines to the bow cleat(s).
- Back vessel down slowly (straight), away from the mooring buoy. Ensure the mooring buoy, and mooring buoy lines do not approach the vessel’s screws/jet drive; do not run over the mooring buoy or mooring buoy lines
6.0 Casting off of Mooring Buoy
Notes 6.3 :
- If needed, move vessel ahead slowly using the engine; - Remove mooring line(s) from bow cleat(s); lower mooring line(s) into the water.
- Ensure the mooring line(s) does not approach the vessel’s screws/jet drive; do not run over the mooring line(s) or mooring buoy
- Safely navigate out of the mooring field.
7.0 Anchoring Preparation
8.0 Anchoring
Notes 8.4 :
- Stop the vessel when at anchorage position.
- Safely lower the anchor (do not throw) until the anchor touches bottom.
- Back vessel down slowly (straight), away from the anchor until:
a) scope of anchor rode is reached AND
b) anchor is set/holding).

Notes 8.5 :
Use all available means:
- Visually: Anchor rode, fixed objects, chart, anchored vessels
- Electronically: Chart, fathometer, other available systems
9.0 Anchor Retrieval
Notes 9.3 :
- Move vessel ahead slowly using the engine;
- Take up the slack in the anchor rode (fake anchor rode on deck out of the way, or feed anchor rode into anchor locker)
- Ensure the anchor line does not approach the vessel’s screws/jet drive; do not run over the anchor line.
- “Break” the anchor free from the bottom, and haul the remaining anchor rode onto the vessel until the anchor is at the water’s edge. (If necessary, secure anchor line to the vessel, and advance the vessel in a wide circle to free the anchor from the bottom.)
